sometimes... i try too hard. i let people use me because

i try to hang out with old friends and catch up with them, but

Car vaults up freeway wall, lodges onto overpass railing

Veteran law enforcers in Roseville have seen many strange traffic accidents over the years on surface streets and Interstate 696, but a bizarre accident Monday afternoon left many shaking their heads in disbelief.
"I've seen cars crash and go down the highway embankment, but I've never seen a car come up the embankment," said Deputy Police Chief Dan Young. "I have never in my life seen anything like this before."

A 19-year-old man died when he lost control of the white Ford Mustang convertible he was driving and skidded up an embankment and became lodged on the Gratiot overpass bridge. As the car dangled by a rear axle over the passing traffic, the driver unhooked his seat belt and fell to the ground below.

Michigan State Police identified the driver as Daniel Maher of Warren. He was rushed from the scene by an ambulance to St. John Hospital in Detroit, where he later was declared dead.

Because of the precarious nature of the dangling vehicle, police shut down eastbound I-696 at Groesbeck for about four hours, causing traffic backups for several miles. Likewise, Roseville police closed both northbound and southbound Gratiot and re-routed traffic for several hours.

Friends of Maher said he was returning home from a funeral for a 17-year-old friend when the accident occurred. He was alone in his car, while a group of friends followed in a van. They were too upset to speak with reporters.

Michigan State Police Trooper Paul Martinez said speed likely was a factor in the incident as witnesses estimated Maher was driving between 80-85 mph. The speed limit on I-696 is 65 mph.

There was no indication that alcohol played a role, but investigators said they'll know for sure following an autopsy that will be conducted today.

"The driver attempted a lane change from the left lane and it appears he didn't have enough room to get over and he jammed on the brakes," Martinez said. "He lost control and went up the embankment, and kind of vaulted sideways up on the wall and ended up on the bridge where the vehicle was stuck."

The car was hanging from its rear end with the driver's side pointing to the ground. A disoriented Maher unlatched the seat belt and fell about 10 feet down, police said.

"I heard this loud bang and I saw the car practically coming over the railing," said Frieda McNielly of Warren, who was in the area. "I looked down the highway and saw this man lying on the ground. He wasn't moving."

Lynne Farrar of Grosse Pointe drove by the Mustang minutes after the 1:20 p.m. accident and couldn't believe what she saw.

"There's the car just dangling from the overpass with stuff falling from it, debris and pieces of the car. It was awful," Farrar said.

A tow truck was called to secure the car by attaching a line to the rear axle to keep it in place while an investigation was conducted. Later, a heavy duty wrecker from Boulevard Trumbull Towing lowered the car to the highway where it mostly broke apart.

Michael Pachla, another deputy police chief in Roseville, said the department called on officers from Roseville and St. Clair Shores to assist in closing the freeway so the car could be removed. The roads were finally opened around 5 p.m.

"The impact on our community was immediate because this intersection at Gratiot and I-696 is really in the heart of our town, so we've really had to make a concentrated effort on re-routing motorists," Pachla said.

Maher was a former Center Line High School student who earned a degree from Enterprise High School in Warren Woods Public Schools, neighbors said.

"He loved that car," said Susie Bashia, who lives next to the Maher family in the area near Martin and Van Dyke in Warren. "He was very proud of it. He comes from a nice family, they're good people. He lives there with his parents and his sister."

According to Michigan Secretary of State records, Maher was ticketed for speeding 70 mph in a 65 mph zone in July 2003.

well i stopped by my grandma's today and was she surprised to see me. even when i got her lottery tickets at joe's general the people there were asking me where i'd been lol. i found out that my aunt faye that lives next door to my grandma visited my brothers down south that i haven't seen in 10 years!!!! AND I COULDA GONE WITH HER!!!! but, my car wasn't functioning. shane is supposed to be at his probation class in like 10 minutes and he's still not home! i might getta job at john r motel they said they WOULD call me today. oh ya jamie's mom came over to tell me that i need to do something with my cats that she's been taking care of for me coz the mom cat is pregnant and they don't get along. wow that was a long sentence. maybe too long. so i gotta figure out what i'm gonna do with my cats before friday morning coz there taking them to the humane society if i don't. shane's home so i gotta jet bye.
